I feel these features are understated in the game, hopefully we can learn to exploit them in tournys..

In the public matches imo they have a moderate to low effect on the map/gameplay. But as super said these will matter very much when fighting in an organized fashion.

Some of these events could potentiollay destroy/cripple an ill positioned infantry perimiter or ground and air vechicels.
Such as shanghai and paracel, these events wreck havoc on any ill-positioned troops.
